Hard times tend to come at us when we least expect it. Sometimes it's completely unavoidable. Living in 999 wasn't anywhere near satisfying like it is today. The constant contamination of disease and bacteria flooding the streets and homes of innocent people. The fear of being poor and having know money not only to feed your loved ones, but to take care of yourself from the disease filled nation. Now a days we have a way of being able to help yourself even though financially you can't support it. Having the thought of being poor and your body crawling with disease made it almost impossible to survive during 999.
-No instead of know , in the sentence "The fear of being poor and having know money", also could use a little more strong vocab.
-Great answer well detailed and answered the prompt well .
- Not full sentences
- Good examples of the struggles and differences between now and then
Forces that I feel were the greatest hardships of life in 999 were they had to live in only simple hunts and the hunts were not very strong and could very easily be brought down. As the article says "flocks sought refuge from wolf pack and barbarian invaders." This basically says that if one night a pack of wolfs or an enemy group were to come along and start wrecking the hunt, it would not be able to hold the force that is being put on it. I also feel like you could really only eat 2 things total and just eat that all the time because you couldn't have sugar or sweet drinks. So that tell me that people had to deal with headaches.
-It addressed the question well , used evidence
-Could work on use of vocab and not just siting out the text use your own words to describe what you're stating and wanting to explain.
-There were a few spelling errors
-It was god that you elaborated on the example you gave to show you understood the article
The forces I felt were the greatest hardship, were all of the different pathogens that infected a lot of people at this time. The reason I find this to be the most powerful force, is because with a lack of medical service, and medications, people could do little to nothing to be cured. Pathogens are still a big threat in today's world, so back then it must have been very bad. There was no way of knowing you had a disease, or sickness until it was too late.
-Could add more content and more variety of vocab
-Great response to the question got the point right across and answered well
-Use stronger vocabulary words
-Good answer with examples of how they would have struggled with illness
The forces that I see that were the greatest hardship of life in 999 were the diseases and lack of medical supplies and care. In the article a paragraph talks about all of the diseases that were affecting society. The sentence that pulls them all together and informs us about these is in paragraph 5. "Tuberculosis was endemic, and so were scabrous skin diseases of every kind: abscesses, cankers, scrofula, tumors, eczema and erysipelas." In 2019 people are not scared of each other when the flu goes around or someone attained a rash, society knows it can be treated with antibiotics. In 999 they did not have antibiotics to help cure a common cold, people were dying all around from not have the medical assistance we do today from something simple like the flu. Illness and disease seems to be a main force of hardship on people in 999.
Instead of citing exactly where you pulled the information you should state it in your own words.
-Proof read for errors if time is left
-Good supported information from the article
The main hardships, in my opinion, would have to be either having to grow up very fast or not knowing what could be laying in the woods close to your house. It doesn't seem like the children in this time had a childhood. It states that some "Emperors were leading armies in their teens; John XI became Pope at the age of 21". I just believe that is crazy. Now the second hardship on not knowing what could be watching you from the woods doesn't shock me as much. I believe that it would have always been an adventure not knowing whats lurking in the woods with me. The story states, "Europe was a collection of untamed forests, countless mile upon mile of trees...". From my perspective I would always want to be out the exploring and adventuring the never seen wild. Growing up in this time would be and adventure of its own.
It is really wordy and it switches topic from talking about growing up , to the woods .
Great detail in explaining your answer
- Stay on topic
- Good explanation of your opinion
The greatest hardships in 999 was the lack of any personal wealth or belongings. According to the articles, "peasants, meanwhile, were relegated to their simple huts where everyone including the animals slept around the hearth." This showed the extent of the poverty. People had to sleep on the floor with their animals around a fire. People didn't have beds for themselves or barns for the animals.

Life in 999 would seem challenging to anyone today in the 21st century. As a human race we are very privileged compared to civilians in 999. The hardest challenge in the primitive times was not knowing if you would have enough goods to provide for you and your family. The article states that there were hunters and farmers that worked for generations in the same family. They did not have a since of money other than trading what they had back and forth. The author also backs up this point by incorporating the facts of how often they fell into a famine very frequently. He says how most people would live to 30 or 50 if they were lucky.
Some may argue that not having certain clothing items could be a first priority but it is more concerning to have food and clean water than to look nice back in those times. Although clothing is very important to fight back against harsh winters and to keep you cozy at night, food is the most essential component of life and these people had to fight daily to survive.
Great use of vocab, great using information from the article and putting it in your own words.
Just at the end it seems a little wordy.
- Some unnecessary sentences
- Strong and well supported answer
The greatest force felt for the hardship of life in 999 is the diseases. In that time period if you were sick there wasn't much that could be done for that person.in that time period diseases such as tuberculosis, cankers, abscesses, eczema, tumors, and eczema were quite common in that time period. There was not a way to cure these diseases so if you contracted a serious you would most likely die.In the article it states that most with leprosy were in the class of pariahs and lived on the outskirts of the cities.

Being a peasant at this time would be the worst of it all. You are the outcast of every other human being in higher power then you. Peasants live in the worst conditions and do the most work for almost nothing. It says in the article how the peasants were relegated to their simple huts while everyone including the animals of this time slept around the hearth. Being a peasant in this time is where at the bottom of the chain and it took the most work to earn what you had to your name and it still wouldnt be enough to amount to the people ahead of you.
I should of used more vocab and detail
Did well explaining what I did
The greatest hardships in 999 were all of the Diseases that went around. In the article it states that Tuberculosis was endemic, and so were other skin diseases". The article also states that a man was lucky to be alive at the age of 30 and that 50 would be considered old. These diseases and illnesses were the greatest hardship for so many people getting them and dying from them. Due to these diseases it made children grow up as soon as possible so they would be useful to the people around them. "Emperors were leading armies in their teens; John XI became pope at the age of 21". Disease was the greatest hardship because it lead many to grow up and some to even dying.

I feel like the greatest hardships of life in 999 was the inequality and surviving illnesses. I picked these because in the article it states that "It was in the lord's castle that peasants and their flocks sought refuge..." To me this shows that the lower class people in this time period were treated with little to no respect if they did not have their own protection from wild animals or invaders. Along with not having much self sufficiency came illness since they were in a way, on their own. "...lepers constituted a class of pariahs living on the outskirts of villages and cities." This evidence form the article shows how the upper class had no concerns for the well being of the lower class.

Your family struggles to survive, and you must defend it from barbarians and wild beasts. These are just few hardships that you might have faced in 999. The greatest hardship that I feel of life in 999 would be the lack of democracy. Without freedom to vote, you would be forced to work and pay taxes to someone who can just sit up in a castle. In the article, its says that a true money economy did not exist and that the lord just hoarded it all. The people who had power owned land and were rich. There was no education because you were focused on surviving. If you were born into the lower class, it was almost impossible to obtain any power.

Living in the year 999, there would have been many hardships to deal with. One of the hardships would be protecting yourself from not only the world around you but also other people. There was always battles going on. There was always a fight for power of people and land. It would be hard to raise a family if you were of lower class. There was also a lot of sickness like tuberculosis and skin diseases like abscess, cankers, and many more. It was always a fight for life during the hardships in 999.

In my opinion, the hardest thing about living in 999 was disease, sickness, and the whole medical side of things. As stated in the article, "Life in 999: A Grim Struggle," it says that illness and disease were always around and someone always had something. A big problem was tuberculosis, a disease people still struggle with today, imagine how hard it was back then with no modern medicine. The article also states that lepers or pariahs were forced to live on the outskirts of towns because no one could find a cure for them. "A man was lucky to survive 30, and 50 was a ripe old age," says Howard G. Many women did not even make it to 30 because of childbirth being so strenuous on the body. Most people were on the lower side of the hierarchy, so they were poor and mostly couldn't afford medical treatment if there was any at all. Sickness and medicine was the hardest force because it affected nearly everyone.

I feel like the greatest hardships of life in 999 would have to be is the people didn't have the things we have today. They also had to work harder for their things. For example peole didn't have sugar available to them. The honey from the swamps were the only thing that provided sweetness for food or drink. Along with not having sugar there wasn't salt either. Which was used for preserving meat and flavoring a culinary culture that possessed few spices. The only way to get salt was to be bought with a poorly circulated coin that only the lord kept and wouldn't give up in his castle. Another example, would be medicine. They didn't have the medicines to cure the diseases. Illness and disease remained constant. A man was lucky to live til 30 and a women lived less than 30. At night to be able to see they had to burn logs. The calendar year would also begin at different times for different regions.

The greatest hardship of life in 999 was the separation of class. For the kings and queens who were born into royalty life was easy, but the people living in inhospitable conditions and subjeted to a hut in the forests like was tough. Feudal lords would be the first to take their share of the harests of primitive agriculture, while the peasants could not even acquire salt. Peasants also had to deal with illnesses and diseases as well. They often did not have the means to find health care or doctors, so if they got sick they would have a very small chance of survival. These examples show some of the greatest hardships of life in 999.

The greatest hardships of life in 999 were illnesses and diseases. Though illnesses and diseases are still around today, they aren't as commonly found as they were in 999. In Life of 999, it states "tuberculosis was endemic, and so were scabrous skin diseases of every kind." Also it states " a man was lucky enough to survive the age of 30... most women lived less than 30 years." This shows that this was very problematic back for life in 999.

One of the greatest hardships that stood out to me were the houses some people had to live in. The peasants had to live in these houses called "huts" while others got to live in these castles made out of timber. The peasants would lay down straw to collect all animal and human waste. Their chores were to sweep out the straw.
Changed topic towards the end , maybe explain more about houses not the peasants chores.
Good that you used evidence from the article.
- Not enough evidence
- Good explanation of the huts
The greatest hardship in 999 was disease. In those times noone knew what caused diseases so they could do nothing about the disease and a lot of people would die. The serfs could not leave their land so they were stuck with the infected people and many of them died because of it. Some of these diseases were lepracy, tumors, eczema, and cankers. Many of these are curable today but in 999 these were all very deadly. The article states that men were lucky to live until 30 and most women died during child birth. There were many other hardships of this time but disease was by far the deadliest.
