The purpose of the drag queen story time is for the children to help them accept everyone and find their own identities. But in the reality it is the parents are using their children to stand up for it all, not for the enjoyment and benefits of the kids. Not everyone can go in and enjoy this/protest what they want but you can send your children to show what you believe in and that seems to be the purpose.
It can be the way we want to show we support it but it is also for the children's enjoyment. They are here listening to a story from a normal person that is expressing themselves and it is teaching them that they can do it as well. Seeing a Drag Queen being a normal person in the community can help the kids find their identities and be who they want to. We do want to show what we believe in but it benefits the children too.
Drag Queens reading to the children is an eye opener not for just the acceptance in the community but as an eye opener to children to show them that it is okay to be who you are. You can be different or feel a different way then someone else and it is okay. To know in a world where you should not be judged for who you are or how you feel. A parent with a child who is gay or a cross dresser would not want the people in the community or anywhere to make fun of their child or try and make them feel as if it was not okay to be who they are. It is a time for acceptance where people should be who they are and not feel ashamed and this reading for the children should be an eye opener for the parents. Just let the children take it in because it is about them it is a time for change and you never know what child could be feeling different and is ashamed or to scared to be who they are and this could just help them be comfortable and be who they are.
The Drag Queen community are doing story time hour all around the country. They are making a kind of stand to show children that it is okay to be different and it is okay to be different. Showing children that its okay is something that should be expressed all over. Drag Queens just like every other member of the LGBTQ community did not have it easy to come out into the world an be who they are and excepted. Drag Queens are reading the books that the library has selected so they are not influencing the children in anyway to be like them or be something they're not. This reading is about letting the children see something different and let them know its okay to be that way if they are or how they feel.
All the benefits that drag queen reading has is all about exposure. Having little kids get used to the fact that there are people who are different than them out there and start accepting them at a younger age so then it is not a problem in the future. In today's society everyone just wants to be accepted and the way we can all be accepted is to have the next generation come up accepting everyone. The drag queens are just trying to make it so that in the future they may not be looked upon as weird or gross but to be accepted for what they believe and how they act.
(Parent) The parents might not want their kids to have been influenced by what they see when they go to the library. The kids are at an age were it is very easy to influence them and possibly put false information in their mind. The parents want their children to discover who they are by them selves and not to be influenced by someone or something from the outside with out any prior knowledge.
The true benefit of story time is that it allows to kids to explore with in their own mind of imagination. It gives them the opportunity to relax and enjoy a peaceful way of listening to a good book. It shouldn't matter what the reader looks like or what his preferences are as long as the kids enjoy their relaxation time then we as people in the same country shouldn't hate. We're all the same and all follow and abide by the same rules, but people find that if you don't believe what I believe then you're wrong. Just respect everyone especially your own kids because story time is a fun and exciting way for your kids to have fun. Don't take that moment away from them because you don't like who is reading the story because you believe in something else.
The true purpose of this event is to spread awareness and acceptance of the drag queen community. They are giving these kids valuable experiences that may never have in there life otherwise, and opening them up to different ways of life than the same one they have. It is a basic human need to find your life and how to live it the way you want. What happens is when most people can not find the way to live that their body and mind tells them is right; they take their own life because they do not feel accepted anywhere else. So, the main goal of the story hour is to spread awareness and acceptance of other lifestyles, because who knows, it could save someones life.
(Parent) What kind of impression does this leave on the kids? Do the kids want the experience? How will the kids feel about this? Why are the other parents against/for it? Will there be any drawbacks if the kids do/do not attend? Why would the kids want to attend?
The purpose of the Drag queen event is to help give more of an understanding of all the different types of people and who they are, and to be accepting of them. The event will help kids to see that being different from everyone else is not wrong, and that you can be accepted for it. Anyone could benefit from the event, most people already can't accept people who are different from themselves, but maybe they can grab a more positive perspective of people who are a part of the LGBTQ community.
( Parent) Allowing the Drag Queens come and talk to kids is pointless. Kids aren't going to be able to fully grasp what is going on around them in that situation. Being that young and being put into a room with people you've never seen that looks like that; you're only going to think that they chose to dress weird. The true danger is all the protesters that take part in being where the event takes place. Children don't need to be around aggressive protesters. Children just don't have the maturity to comprehend what is happening around them, which is why the Drag Queen event has no significance whatsoever
The true purpose of this story time for the kids and the community is that it is suppose to help kids understand that it is perfectly fine to be different than other people. It also shows that with all that is in today's world, being different is not something to be embarrassed about and you could show that by doing events like story time. This event is not going to be put on because the speakers are not going to force anything on you. They just want you to see that they are comfortable being who they are. They also want to help the community understand they are just trying to help people find out who they are through the younger generation. They want the kids to understand that they are just like them and they are normal people living the lives they wanted to live and that they are just trying to help kids understand that they need to live their lives the way they want to without being judged.
We believe that this is how we would hoped people would understand about this event. We have invited the Drag Queen in the great city Evansville, where here we say E is for everybody. This doesn't matter if you agree with this or not but, they are here to help the younger generation understand that it is perfectly okay to be different. These drag queens are very brave for doing this, they could be hiding somewhere knowing if they were seen they had the risk of being judged. Well that is why they are here. They want to show that as long as you live your life the way you want to, then be judged shouldn't matter.
This event benefits the kids by allowing them to understand and be involved with one of the many different kinds of people we have in todays world. Drag queens allow younger people to get to know their story and be aware that they are people just like everyone else. Most hate on the idea of storytime at the library, but i'm not sure they fully think of their kids when allowing them or not to go to the library. Being that the Drag queens are targeted, saying no to letting their kids go for their safety because someone could go to harm the queens but end up harming the children, is one thing, but some parents dont give their kids a chance and they say no just because they dont support the queens and don't want their kids to be around them at all. They believe that's not normal. By the way it looks is this events purpose is to let the drag queens get out and feel like all the "normal" people, while simply reading to kids at a library.
This event is such a great opportunity for kids! They get to meet someone who has been through hard times and still goes out everyday and has a smile on their face. Most of the LGBTQ people hear so many hate comments, about how "this isn't normal, your gender is the gender that you were born as..." so on, and so on, but none of them listen to what others say. To have kids go to a library and listen to normal people read books to them is awesome and it should be well supported by everyone. By the way it looks, they are just trying to be nice to kids and help them understand the different things in the world. Parents should be proud of letting their kids go meet someone as helpful as the LGBTQ group.
The true benefit and purpose of the drag queen story time for kids and our community is to learn to about and accept other styles of living. Many people who are in the LGBTQ+ community struggle with acceptance of who they are personally and some kids and adults in the Evansville area may find a way through seeing others being true to themselves. Personally, I know people who have struggled with their gender identity and sexuality and I feel that if we show people that there are other options on how you could live your life then it would in turn help their families as well. With that being said, many families are not accepting of their children or relatives leading their life in such a manner, but this could help them to learn that who they have known is not really how that person has felt for many years.
The children attending this story time won't think these people are wrong in their lifestyle choice or that they are confused about their personalities. All they care about is the story being read. Many people will say that the children don't understand why these people cross-dress, and they are right. But with the kids not knowing why the people do what they do, they will learn that it is okay to be different and not to judge others. Kids may not even know that these drag queens are men dressed as women. They may ask questions and you should be able to answer them in a way they will understand.
The purpose is claimed to be to raise awareness and acceptance for the drag queen movement to the younger generation. Children are very vulnerable to certain lifestyles that some might consider wrong. Reading to the children who don't really understand the purpose of what they are attending is the problem. Is the purpose of the drag queen solely for the parents or the kids? Children at this age do what their parents say to do. If their parents support the movement and want to make a statement, they are going to bring their kids to the event regardless of what the child wants to do. These children are being used as pawns to establish a political side and it is wrong.
Everyone and their beliefs matter. It should not be up to us as a community to decide what is okay and not okay. The true purpose of this story time for kids is for kids to see that it's okay to be you. Although many people may feel differently towards this moment, I feel that it is not up to society to judge. People are not being forced to participate in this event and do not have to support anything they do not want to. With the Drag Queens reading to the children, it shows them that you don't have to feel embarrassed or be afraid to try new things.
( Parent )
Is this okay? I've never seen anything like this. How am I suppose to feel about what I'm seeing? These are questions that a child may ask out loud or in their own mind. As a parent you never know what is going on in your child's head. How do we as parents actually know the right time and way to address a child with this topic? We don't. Although is it okay to be accepting of everyone and their beliefs there is also a way to handle things correctly. A child does not have the choice if he or she would or would not any to attend this event. It should only be allowed certain ages to where the child could talk about and understand more at an older age like 16, rather than 4 or 5.
The purpose and benefit for the story time for kids at the library is for kids to learn to accept change in many things including gender equality. The reason they host it for young kids is so they can learn to accept and develop a kind of respect for who and whatever anyone wants to be. This can affect the kids by making them falsely believe they are something they're not and for many parents this could be troubling. Many parents disagree with this cause and it could be because they wouldn't extend this for parent and older adults first before bringing children into the mix with little or no say. They know that this would not only affect the way kids act within a generation , but it could only lead to more problems down the line. They should probably take a different approach. Even if most don't agree.
From a parents perspective they would know when their kid or any other kid would be ready to experience. For too young of minds they could either get the wrong idea or be pushed the wrong way about the situation even if it is just a simple story time. This could lead to some problems down the line beyond just the view of acceptance of others.
Over the last few years, the world has tried to becme more inclusive; even to include groups of people that would never have been included in the past. Now, people are trying to push acceptance of groups of people on kids that are not able to understand these people. The Drag Queen Story Time is specifically meant to influence children to believe in their cause. According to brain studies, the human brain is not able to undertand complex thinking until the ages 12-13. This happens to be the age that Drag Queen Story Time stops reading to. They stop reading to this age because they can understand the comcept. Kids too young to understand may just think that these people are playing dress up and it is acceptable to do this anytime they want without understanding the consequences. If the "cool kid" goes to this event and thinks its cool and goes to school talking about it or dressing up as a girl then others may be influenced to do the same as well.
For thousands of year, our community has been prosecuted, hunted, and killed. We have been forced into hiding who we are. People are now becoming more and more welcoming to us. The only way to continue this progress is to allow children to familiarize with drag queens. If children see drag queens and other LGBT+ community more often, they can spread love and not hate to our community. We only want to read books to children for their enjoyment and education.
This event hosted by the public library's across the country openly invites drag queens to host a story book time in front of my children, their parents, and family. The benefits of this event can be much wider than a regular story time. This story time is much different. It can open up the children's eyes to a different kind of person. Not only will it inform the children but it may teach them to become accepting of these people as many people are not. The LGBT is made up of gays, bisexuals, and transgenders. They want to help the next generation learn about them and that they are simply people too. Although many people may attend this event, many will also go against it. If this event happens or not in Evansville will show the rest of the country the general stance of our opinions on LGBT.
This event has sparked up a lot of controversy here in Evansville. People are publicly protesting the event. Therefore this could spark up a safety concern. As important as it is to preach equality and fair treatment of all kinds of people and their lifestyles. The board of the EVPL will make the final decision to come. The parents have a decision to make to if this were happen. Nobody is forcing this on anyone. The safety of the kids is at utmost importance.
The true purpose of the story time for kids is just for the attention. They are looking for some kind of attention that they were never given before and they see this as a free-be. With this starting nationally it gets a lot of attention. They might say we are just wanting to read to the kids, but i feel as if they are trying to get something else across with this event. Also doing with could also could put the kids in an unsafe place. Many people do not agree with this event, so if it were to get shutdown it will just give them more attention that they are wanting.
This event has brought a lot controversy in the community, among many people. It has started some protest and has been brought up in a meeting and the people got to voice their opinion on this topic. The best way to settle this would be to have a town vote on rather or not the event still goes on.
The Evansville community has different points of view about big trends and how they affect us as a whole. There are some benefits to this event while there are also some negative views. One positive is that parents can decide if they want their children to see the difference in what they believe to maybe what the parents believe. While on the other side of that some parents may not want their child exposed to this kind of thing because they strongly disagree with it. While another down side to this argument is that people aren't guaranteed safety during this event, due to the fact the the LGBTQ+ community is targeted. So there are more negative views over benefits of this story time event
I'm going to give how the EVPL C.E.O considers it.
As the EVPL C.E.O they would have to look at both sides and see how this will effect the community. If they think that this will benefit the Evansville community more than it would be a downfall then they should hold the event to give children a new look in the world. While on the other hand if they think that it is a bad idea because of all the negativity that the LGBTQ+ community gets then they should rethink it for the safety of the child and the safety of the Drag Queens as well. The C.E.O can't just put their perspective in and go with it they have to take time and really think if this will benefit the tri-state the way they want it to.
Drag queens are coming to Evansville for story time. The event is pointed towards young children, it is meant to work on acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. The thing is that children who are so young may not be thinking about their sexuality or whether or not it is okay to LGBTQ+. Children are very impressionable at such a young age, this event just seems very inappropriate for the age group. The goal for the education of these children should be to focus on issues that are set in stone, instead of such controversial subjects like this.
Evansville is a city of acceptance, and this event is about acceptance. Drag queens are welcome here just like everyone else; if they want to come and read to children there is nothing wrong with that. Of course it is up to the parents on what they wish to expose their children to. However, the opportunity will be available to give the children some perspective on the alternative lifestyles that some people choose to lead. The drag queen story time is a fantastic chance for LGBTQ+ to spread their wings and become more accepted. This event should proceed as planned, as Evansville is "E for everyone".
The true purpose of this story time is acceptance for drag queens and the LGBT community. That however is not what will happen. It won't create acceptance. It will only create a stronger divide. The kids that will actually be taken there for this story time are the ones who have family members that are members of the LGBT community. Those kids have already pretty much accepted the community. On the contrary, this event only further strengthens the fight for traditional rights. This story time is a poison to young children's minds. They are being told that being a drag queen is alright, but it is not. It is important to accept them because they made their choice, but it can't be played off an acceptable way of life.
Drag queens coming to town to read to children has been a largely talked about topic. The event is scheduled and preparation has begun. Those who do not agree with drag queens must accept that this event must happen. We will have a much larger problem on our hands if we shut them down. It will be like gasoline to their fire. It will burn and burn until they have a huge fighting force behind them stating that they are not accepted and deserve equality. The best thing we can do is to welcome them and treat them with respect while letting it clearly be known that their way of life is not acceptable, but since they are people they will be treated with respect.
Books tell a story, but behind the words and paper may be a secret meaning. The true benefit of the story time for kids and the community is hidden. The reality of the drag queens presenting in front of kids is to allow acceptance of LGBTQ community and awareness. However, children at these young ages don't fully grasp the concept of some of the ideas. The motive isn't for the kids because the entire point of reading a book to kids is to help their listening skills. The books are chosen by the library. This event should take place, and the people who wish to attend may. The target audience is the community. The drag queens wish to make a statement that kids and everyone can be comfortable with them and want acceptance from the community.
(Kid) As an adolescent, the LGBTQ community could take advantage of smaller minds. The point of story time is to put me in a situation where kids are forced to participate. Parents make the choice on attending this event making children listen and not giving them an option. If drag queens speak at the library, young people must come accustomed to them without being old enough to make their own decision. Story time with drag queens should not occur with this young age group.
The kids have their own frame of mind. They are their own person, and should be allowed to select how they want to live their lives. The drag queens shouldn't push themselves into other peoples way of living. If others are interested in how the drag queens live their lives then the kids will chose for themselves to go see them. Story time is a way for kids to relax and enjoy their time away from schooling, drama, or other personal problems. Having this controversial matter present shouldn't be a thing in their lives. If the kids choose to be around and surround themselves with that lifestyle then they will do it on their own choice. Not the parents or the drag queens themselves.
The parents perspective would be that it is teaching the children to be accepting and that everyone is different. That everyone has their own perspectives and beliefs. These Drag Queens are people just like everyone else. Just because someone isn't like them doesn't mean that they are any different.
There are many different opinions on this controversial topic of Drag Quees reading stories to children at the library. From a parental perspective, chidren can be seen a quite vulnerable and impressionable. They are young and can easily be persuaded to think things that need to be talked about later in life such as drag queens. Although it is 2019 and everyone is becoming more open to the LGBTQ community, children should learn about this later in life such as middle school or high school. Imagine a young boy in elementary school going home and wanting to put making up. Although this is not a bad thing, many kids at school can be strongly opinionated and tell that little boy that he shouldn't be wearing make up becuase its only for girls. This little boy would become tramatized from geting bullying because of his choices and later on believe he is a disappoitnment to society because of the way he is. These feelings could later on turn into even bigger problems such as depression. Overall the best option would be for the children is waiting until they are older the learn about the LGBTQ and let them make there choices, rather than forcing it upon with drag queens reading books to them at the library.
Opening up the Evansville North Park library for Drag Queens to read to children has stirred up disscussion all throughout Evansville. This controvercial topic has been talked about everywhere including the Tristate news website. After reading this article, from my perspective children should be exposed to the LGBTQ community under certain conditions. Chidren are young and don't have much experience in the real world. Knowing this means kids are quite impressionable and easily pursuaded, so I believe children must be of a specific age to attend this event. Along with being a certian age, the children should have the choice of going or not going to the event. They should not be forced to go or forced to stay home during this time. It is their life nd if the wish to go and become more informed with this discussion it is their right to. As long as children are old enough to attend this event and choose to go, I believe Drag Queens reading to children is a good idea.
